Life on Earth Before the Phonograph:
Rare Music Boxes Exhibited at CAPS Meeting

At a recent CAPS meeting, a number of members exhibited some beautiful examples of music boxes. Illustrated is a closeup of a Lecoultre orchestral cylinder box with a 16" cylinder and hidden drum and bells. This music box once belonged to John Hamilton Gray, Premier of Prince Edward Island, a province of Canada. A special feature begins on page 6.

Phonograph 'Show and Tell'

For the third time in as many years CAPS members were asked to bring out some of their prized phonographs for the March meeting. As usual they responded with enthusiasm and provided the presenter, Mike Bryan, with some unusual and interesting machines to talk about. Illustrated and described in this issue are: a Berliner hand-crank Gramophone, circa 1895 (pictured); an Edison Standard Phonograph with Bettini Micro-attachment, circa 1898; a Busy Bee Grand, circa 1906-09; a Wonder Talking Machine, circa 1912; a U-S Rex cylinder player, circa 1912; a Coronet Toy Gramophone, late 1920s; and a Pal Portable, early 1930s.

Collecting Cylinder Phonographs in Quebec

Jean-Paul Agnard has been hunting down phonographs primarily in Quebec since 1970. His collection now comprises more than 200 different working cylinder machines. Illustrated is a Pathé Celeste made in 1900. In an article beginning on page 3, he describes with photographs four extraordinary finds in his 28 years of collecting.

It is taken from an 1896 advertisement in Harper's Magazine for the handcranked Berliner Gram-o-phone, style 7 1/2, sold by the National Gramophone Company, 874-875 Broadway, New York City.
