Caruso's Silver Screen Debut a Bust
by Barry R. Ashpole
May - June - 1997
Enrico Caruso may have been credited with making the single most important contribution to establishing
the phonograph as a legitimate means of "entertainment," but the great Italian tenor's foray into movies
was far less notable. Nonetheless, Caruso's failed attempt to become a "star" of the silent screen makes
for a colourful episode in the early history of the movie industry. An article, beginning on page 3, is based
on the author's presentation to the March meeting of CAPS.

Radio and the First Twenty Years of Electrical Sound Recording in Canada
by Bryan Dewalt
March - April - 1997
Herbert Berliner is pictured experimenting with recording off radio (ca. 1927). In Canada, Berliner was quicker
than his American competitors to embrace electrical recording. Laboratory notebooks still exist for
"Electrotone Tests" dating as early as June 1924. The advent of radio and the first twenty years of electrical
sound recording in Canada is the focus of an article beginning on page 3.

by Emily Thompson

Pictured is Marie Rappold singing along with her Edison Re-Creations in 1919 before a capacity crowd at
Pittsburgh's Carnegie Hall. Edisons Tone Tests made for great theatre whether in the lavish concert halls of
large cities or in less impressive "facilities" in small towns. The second part of a special three-part feature
begins on page 3.
